A bear holed up in a Barrhaven backyard late Monday morning and was taking a nap.

The bear was first spotted around 8:30 a.m. As of 11 a.m., the animal was in a private backyard in the Fallowfield area near the transitway.

Earl Mulligan Drive has been closed between Woodroffe Avenue and Woodgate Way.

Police say the “big” bear, believed to be an adult, slept and then woke up to look around before going back to sleep. The bear appears injured and the police are waiting for advice from the Ministry of Natural Resources.

Later that morning, police said the bear climbed a tree.

Police waited for the animal to wake up, hoping – if he or she is in a cooperative mood – to keep the animal out of residential areas with sirens and lights.

From 1 p.m., nature conservation officers from the NCC were on site. In September 2018, officials reassured a bear that had wandered around the ByWard market. This bear was then lowered from a tree on a rope with the help of firefighters and was later marked and released.

OC Transpo rerouted Route 171 in the Woodroffe Avenue and Earl Mulligan Drive area Monday morning after the bear was spotted. The affected routes run from Fallowfield to Barrhaven Center.

According to the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, bears are stressed when caught by surprise and usually just want to flee.

“In general, the louder the bear, the less dangerous it is if you don’t approach it. The noise is intended to “scare you off” and acts as a warning signal, according to the province’s “bear-wise” website.

The ministry advises those who encounter a bear to slowly withdraw while the bear remains in sight and waits for it to leave.

If you are near a building or vehicle, go inside as a precaution. Drop any food you have with you and slowly move away.

If a bear is sitting in a tree, leave him alone. Leave the area. The bear will come down when it feels safe.

Do not run, climb a tree, or swim. Do not kneel, make eye contact, or approach the bear to get a better view of him. Never try to feed a bear.

“An endangered black bear issues warning signs to let you know that you are too close. A black bear standing on its hind legs is not a sign of aggressive behavior. The bear tries to see you better or to capture your scent. “
